Described as a “Perfect Venue” by the President of the United States — Barack Obama, the David L. Lawrence Convention Center hosted the world leaders for the G-20 Summit, officially known as the Pittsburgh Summit. The 1.5 million square foot Convention Center was transformed into an elaborate customized setting for the largest Summit ever held in the United States.
The Pittsburgh Summit was the first time the G-20 met outside a nation’s capital city. 5500 people attended including 3870 press, 700 delegates, 75 interpreters, 11 international organizations and 22 countries including 25 heads of state. The countries represent over 85% of the world’s economy.
One of the primary reasons President Obama selected Pittsburgh was due to the DLCC’s Gold LEED® certification and commitment to green practices adopted by the Center in the way it was built and the way it operates. By nature, events produce a large volume of trash and the Summit was not any different, producing 21.15 tons of trash. But the amazing component was the level of trash the DLCC staff diverted from landfill – 73.8%. Over 15 tons was recycled (cardboard, paper, glass, aluminum, plastic) or composted (organic elements and compostable paper products).
An event of this magnitude required a skilled labor force – men and women dedicated to producing the highest quality of work. “Pittsburgh is known for its hard-work ethic and this Summit required over 41,000 labor hours to prepare for, operate and dismantle the Pittsburgh Summit.”, said Mark J. Leahy, general manager of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
